First Language Acquisition by Infants

In this journal, the author examines how the process of language development by 3 babies in Kerman, Iran for 12 months. Each baby is analyzed separately and data is collected every month. This case study was a development of descriptive one and data consisting of in-depth interviews, observations, audio and video recordings, notes and reports.

1. 0-2 month
At this stage, new born babies react to their sounds in their environment. The babies started to coo and goo and babble with simple sounds. The natural sounds of babies made were crying, reflexive crying, coughing, burping, and swallowing which are called vegetative sounds. They communicated through cries and body movement. They could not speak because of their muscles' weakness, they showed their emotions by crying, touching, and moving their feet and hands.



2. 2-4 month
At this stage, the infants already recognize their mother tongue. They will smile when they hear their mother's voice and when they hear other people's voices they will be silent and pay attention.

3. 4-6 month
At this stage, the infants began producing vowel sounds and consonants in the form of: P, B and M (bilabial sound). They began to repeat simple sound combinations such as ba-ba, da-da etc.

4. 6-8 month
At this stage, infants began to say their first simple word like "mama", "dada", "papa",
"Tutu" etc. The infants also know their name and response if someone calls them.

5. 8-10 month
At this stage, the infants began to be attracted to toys, they like to hold objects and sometimes offer it to others to attract their attention. Babies also start talking more clearly not like the previous stage. They responded appropriately to friendly and angry tones.

6. 10-12 month
At this stage, the infants' vocabulary will increase. Babies also start cleverly using a few words that they remember to explain what they feel. They also understand if we say "no".
